secondary events

Our Secondary Events offer more flexibility for team members to volunteer in areas they choose.  Similar to our Primary Events, we focus on community support and community involvement, all while still supporting STEM awareness and STEM opportunities.

Hour of Code

To ensure exposure to STEM related activities at an early age, our team plans and hosts Hour of Code at our local elementary schools. The event allows younger students to explore coding at a basic level and be able to interact with high school students. When possible, we also transport a working robot to the event, giving the students the opportunity to drive a competition FRC robot.

STEMographies

STEMographies were created as a way for young girls to hear directly from women in STEM related fields without needing to be at a live event. Our team members set up times to conduct recorded interviews with women in multiple fields, which we then catalog on our YouTube channel. This allows everyone, but especially women of all ages, to learn about the experiences of those who have achieved success in their fields and hear words of encouragement. We continue to expand this program each year, working to cover more career fields to inspire as many as possible.

Peer Tutoring

After analyzing test data and test scores, our schools administration realized that additional supports were needed for struggling students, particularly in mathematics. Although students in our school are able to schedule for extra help, math teachers were unable to make time for every struggling student during the short 45 minute help blocks that occur two to three times per week. When the principal reached out to our Lead Mentors for ideas, our team helped to put together a pilot plan with the National Honor Society to volunteer and tutor students in all mathematics courses. The pilot program has been extremely successful, and our team is currently working to expand and add additional content to the program.
